Hampshire Country Home
2024
To retain the integrity of the original architecture while enhancing its environmental performance, light, clarity, and functionality for multigenerational modern living.
Set within a picturesque Hampshire village, this country house whose quiet, symmetrical architecture spoke of a bygone era. The brief was to breathe new life into its structure, drawing out the grace of the original form while elevating it to a contemporary standard of design, comfort, and longevity.
The approach was guided by respect for the home’s character and surroundings. The exterior, defined by its steel windows, rendered facades and tiled rooflines, was comprehensively refurbished and enhanced through the introduction of new pitched dormer roofs to reflect the local vernacular style.
Through out the property energy efficiency was maximised through the introduction of high-performance insulation, new bespoke steel framed windows, and a modern efficient heating system.
Internally, a complete reconfiguration was undertaken; the introduction of a new gable wing enabled the opening up of a previously fragmented plan to create a calm, axial progression of spaces. The heart of the home became an extended kitchen and family living area, flooded with natural light via Crittall-style glazing framing views of the lawn.
The interior palette was drawn from the surrounding countryside, limed oak, terracotta, natural paint colours, and soft textiles in muted, natural tones.
New joinery was custom designed, balancing architectural restraint with handcrafted precision. Hidden storage, and flexible spaces reflect the thoughtful needs of a modern family without ever disrupting the building’s sense of peace.
PROJECT DETAILS
Each room designed to feel intuitive, airy, and timeless, with moments of intimacy created through subtle transitions in material warmth, and natural light.
Rather than overwrite the property's identity, this country house celebrates its heritage, quietly modernised to support a richer, more flexible way of living. The final result is a house that feels as if it has always been this way.
